Pirin is a mountain range in southwestern Bulgaria with the highest peak, Vihren (2,914 m). The larger part of the territory of Pirin is declared as a National Parк and in 1983 it was included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. North Pirin is the largest and most visited part of the mountain, famous for its Alpine landscape with moraines, U-shaped valleys, rocky thresholds, steep and high peaks. Featuring 40 peaks above 2500 m, 176 glacial lakes situated in beautiful circuses and 2 small glaciers, Pirin is also noted for its rich flora and fauna. There are 20 marked hiking trails, a number of cozy huts, well-kept shelters and reliable mountain rescue service. Pirin Mountain is also an important SPA and SKI destination. The combination of favorable natural conditions – more than 100 mineral springs at the foothills of the mountain and varied historical heritage, makes it an attractive place for hikers, alpinists, skiers, food and wine connaisseurs, jazz and film festivals lovers. The main ski center is Bansko and it is the biggest on the Balkan peninsula, known for its winter sports and international competitions held there every year.
